Recommended defender picks for this Gameweek include players from Liverpool, Manchester City, Everton and Sheffield United.

🌟 Alexander-Arnold/van Dijk LIV, £7m/£6.5m

Andrew Robertson may seem the obvious choice as the highest hauler of points of Liverpool’s defenders last season, but there are reasons to look beyond him.

Trent Alexander-Arnold ended 2018-19 with ten assists in eleven games, so the emphasis to create may have shifted more onto him.

Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk looks to be the primary target for all set-pieces, which should get him a few goals – as in the Community Shield – even the odd assist.

The Reds start at home to newly promoted Norwich, which should be a home banker.

🌟 Stones/Zinchenko MCI, £5.5m each

Aymeric Laporte may not be fit in time for the opening day trip to West Ham, but John Stones and Oleksandr Zinchenko offer cheaper routes into their likely starting defence.

🌟 Lucas Digne EVE, £6m

Everton have a good set of opening fixtures and ended the last campaign strongly, keeping many clean sheets, while Digne has shown plenty of potential for goals and assists.

🌟 Jack O’Connell SHU, £4.5m

Sheffield United had the tightest defence in last season’s Championship and have some decent home fixtures in the opening months, while an opening day trip to Bournemouth could see an upset.

As an overlapping centre-back in their intriguing set-up, O’Connell could also offer attacking returns.
