Referee João Capela spelled out ‘RIP’ in the centre circle with his vanishing spray prior to kick-off as União da Madeira took on Boavista in the Portuguese Primeira Liga on Sunday, following the death of his colleague and friend Paulo Paraty.

As the players from both sides gathered for a moment of reflection before the game, Capela sprayed the large letters with the recent addition to an official’s toolkit, clear for whole the crowd to see – a move that was met with thunderous applause around the stadium.

Former judge and top-level referee Paulo Paraty died on Wednesday, aged 53.
