Mark Hughes’s debut season at the Britannia was a resounding success, guiding the Potters to their first top-half finish in the top flight since the ’70s off the back of some exciting attacking football.

Expectations may be higher than ever at Stoke but this hasn’t quite been reflected in their players’ Fantasy prices, so gather round and suckle upon the teats of our Potters-potty Fantasy Premier League tips…

Peter Odemwingie – £6.5m

If the Nigeria international can claim a regular starting berth – and, with plenty of competition for places and Odemwingie’s own ‘eccentric’ character, it’s arguably a big if – then he could be one of the bargains of the season.

This is because he’s listed as a midfielder, which means he’ll earn one point more per goal than if he’d been listed as a forward.

If he gets his usual 8 or 9 league goals, he’ll have been worth it. If he carries over his scoring ratio of almost one in two from the end of last season, he’ll be nigh on essential.

Stephen Ireland – £5m

As much as we like the look of Steve Sidwell at £5.5m, the reality is that he’ll struggle to dislodge either Glenn Whelan or Steven N’Zonzi from the heart of Stoke’s midfield.

More likely to start the season is Ireland, who looks to be gradually getting his career back on track and could operate just off the main striker (likely new boy Mame Biram Diouf).

If he can rediscover the peak goal-scoring form of his Manchester City days then he’ll make a mockery of that price tag.

Marko Arnautović – £6.5m

Big things are expected of the Austrian wide midfielder this season, so much so that he looks a shoo-in for a starting place even with competition from the likes of Odemwingie, Bojan Krkić (potentially a bargain himself at just £5.5m) and good old Jon Walters.

Doesn’t look good for Walters, does it? At least he’s there in case Stoke need to revert to a spot of ‘kick and rush’ at any point.
