…so Football Burp got thinking: who else has had a shocker or ‘mare worthy of note in recent times? As such, we present you with this compendium of bad days at the office…
Making his Premier League debut for Chelsea on Saturday, the Senegalese striker might very well have had a few sympathetic words for Walters – just this August, he missed a penalty and scored a late own-goal equaliser while playing for Newcastle United in the Tyne-Wear derby at Sunderland.
The Argentine missed three penalties in one game in a 3-0 Copa America defeat to Colombia in 1999…
Stan van den Buys
As mentioned in our recent list of own goal gluts, van den Buys scored all three goals for Anderlecht in a 3-2 win over Germinal Beerschot in the 1995-96, the problem being that he was playing for the latter, more acely named Belgian side at the time.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Ashley Ward
How often do you see those two names packaged together? Both players have missed a penalty and got sent off in the same match – Ronaldo for Real Madrid v Almería in 2009, Ward for Barnsley v Sunderland in 1998 – but both players redeemed themselves by scoring (at the right end!) as well. Before they were sent off, obviously.
Players who missed two penalties in one match…
Jose Sand for Racing Club v Atletico Rafaela, 2012 (on his debut!)
Darren Bent for Sunderland v Tottenham Hotspur, 2010
Andy Johnson for Everton v Metalist Kharkiv, 2007
Yakubu for Middlesbrough v Bristol City, 2007 (including shoot-out)
Massimo Maccarone for Siena v Torino, 2007
Players who missed a penalty and scored an own-goal in the same match…
Clint Dempsey for Fulham v Swansea City, 2011
Alan Keane for Sligo Rovers v KS Vllaznia, 2009
Juan Pablo Angel (!) for Aston Villa v Tottenham Hotspur, 2006
