Saudi Arabia scored deep into both halves to beat Egypt 2-1 and finish third in Group A, with both teams already eliminated before kick-off.

The Saudis had a penalty saved by 45-year-old Essam El-Hadary, the oldest player in World Cup history, who capped a memorable day by clawing Fahad Al-Muwallad’s spot kick onto the crossbar.

At that point Egypt were still leading 1-0 thanks to Mohamed Salah’s opener, but they lost to goals from Salman Al-Faraj and Salem Al-Dawsari well into stoppage time in each half.

The result left Egypt bottom of the group with three defeats out of three and they’ll no doubt be wondering what could have been with a fully fit Salah.
