Belgium beat a weakened England 2-0 in Saint Petersburg on Saturday to ensure a third-place finish at Russia 2018 and consign Gareth Southgate’s side to fourth.

Thomas Meunier opened the scoring after four minutes to give the Belgians an early lead, with Eden Hazard doubling their advantage in the second half.

England’s best chance meanwhile, fell to Eric Dier, whose dinked effort over Thibaut Courtois was cleared off the line by his Spurs teammate Toby Alderweireld.

As the Three Lions end a creditable but ultimately disappointing World Cup campaign with defeat, here are the best jokes from Belgium 2-0 England, the World Cup third place play-off at Russia 2018:

The 3rd place playoff needs replaced by a World Cup All-Star game. Bring back the 45 year old keeper, the guy who tried the somersault throw, Herve Renard. Champion & McCoist do commentary. Robbie Williams closing ceremony. Trophy presented by Kirsten Dunst or Mel, from Mel & Sue
