Stones was the subject of a £40m bid from Chelsea last summer, but his club campaign has been littered with costly mistakes that have seen him relegated to Roberto Martínez’s substitutes bench.
Last night he incurred further ignominy when his costly slip led to Danny Rose conceding a penalty as the Dutch brought England back down to earth following their 3-2 comeback win in Germany.
Roy Hodgson appears to have faith, but if these John Stones jokes are anything to go by then the watching public certainly harbour reservations about taking him to Euro 2016:
6,834 – Number of times John Stones needs to give the ball away until people stop saying he's the greatest defender in a generation. Slip.

John Stones' enduring determination to be a midfielder, regardless of what position he's assigned to play, is inspiring in its own way.
