Talking Arsenal with Sundara Karma

Drummer Haydn Evans discusses The Gunners.

Sundara Karma

Sundara Karma recently released new single “A Young Understanding” and are set to go on tour, so we caught up with the band’s drummer Haydn Evans for a chat about Arsenal…

How did you come to support the Gunners?

My Grandad grew up in North London and he’s always been a Gooner, would be a bit of a shame if I didn’t support Arsenal.

What are your thoughts on the season so far? And what are your expectations for the rest of the season?

Hopefully in the next 6 games we’ll be able to take a few points. I’ve still got hopes for the top spot but it looks doubtful. If Leicester go on and win the Premier league then fair play, they deserve it to be honest.

We’ve been playing well all season, but it happens every year, where we lose our mojo in January and our hopes of the title go out the window. We’ve definitely got the quality in the side but the execution is poor at the moment, which is a shame

Do you think Arsène Wenger is doing a good job? If not, who would you like to see replace him?

I think Arsène’s doing a decent job. We’re just going through a bit of a bad spell at the moment. He’s one of the best managers in the world. He’s won the FA cup more times than anyone else and had a legendary 49 games unbeaten.

Arsène’s definitely got a lot more to give before he steps down, but when that time comes I wouldn’t mind someone like Pep Guardiola coming into replace him and bringing something new and fresh to the side.

Which areas of the team/squad would you like to see strengthened?

We need a centre-mid, someone who’s going to make challenges, run with the ball and create chances. We need a couple of centre-backs, I think bringing Gabriel in may have not been the best decision. Someone with a bit more quality and experience would be ideal.

In general the squad isn’t looking too bad, we’ve just got so many good players out injured. Now Welbeck is back, we’ve got more options up front but I would like to see someone with a bit more star quality up front, someone like Benzema. We haven’t had someone of that quality since Henry and Bergkamp were in the side.

Have you managed to get to the ground much to watch them over the years?

Yeah, I get over to the Emirates every so often, if I can. I go with my little brother sometimes, and we love it. Love a nice flat pint and cold chips at the stands as well. I normally just watch the game on the box at the pub or at home though.

Would you be able to name the first, best and worst games you’ve ever been to?

I think my first game was at Highbury when I was 8 or 9, it was a Champions League game which we won 5-1 against Rosenborg. I think Pires and Henry scored cracking goals. I went to the FA cup final last year when we burried Villa 4-0. I missed Sánchez’s goal just after half-time though, the queue for the beers was way too long at Wembley. That was probably the best game I’ve been to.

But seeing us get beaten by Chelsea at home earlier in the year when Mertesacker got sent off for that challenge on Costa in the opening minutes was the worst. I think we played alright to keep it 2-0 with a sending off.

Finally, if you had to select a 5-a-side team out of all the Arsenal players you’ve seen play in your time as a fan, who would you pick?

Jens Lehmann in goal. Patrick Vieira and Kolo Touré at the back, Mesut Özil in the middle and Henry up front. That would be a killer 5-a-side squad.
