Talking Rangers with… Modern Faces

Drummer Gaz discusses current goings-on at his beloved Gers.

Modern Faces
Modern Faces… Ger know what I mean?

Modern Faces have been causing a stir with their anthemic indie-rock, so we collared their drummer Gaz for a chat about his beloved Rangers…

It can’t have been the easiest few years to be a Rangers fan…

Aye, going into administration was something new for us – unfortunately Dunfermline have gone into it as well. But we’re miles ahead at the top of League One and I think it’ll be one of those things where we go straight back up to the Premier League.

It’s looking that way. Are you happy with the job Ally McCoist is doing overall? Do you think he should be blooding more youngsters?

No, I think the guys at the minute are doing fine – the likes of Jon Daly, Nicky Law and veterans like Lee McCulloch. We’ve only drawn two games this season and won the rest, so I can’t complain, even if that’s expected of them.

There was a possibility of going back into administration but fortunately they’ve managed to come up with the £1.5m they need, so hopefully we’ll stay out of it for a bit longer!

Are you able to get to Ibrox much?

To be honest, we’re that busy with the band now, whether it be in the studio or gigging, that it’s a bit of a nightmare trying to get to Ibrox.

My mates are there every week but in our situation we can’t get to as much football as we’d like to. We certainly try to catch as much as we can on TV, though.

Do you remember the first game you ever went to?

I do. You’re taking me back! I think the first game I ever went to was in 1999 against Bayern Munich. I went with my mate and his dad, who are big time Rangers fans who’ve had season tickets for umpteen years.

Rangers were winning 1-0 through Jörg Albertz but Bayern Munich equalised in the dying minutes. The atmosphere was incredible.

Jörg Albertz, there’s a name I’ve not heard in a while. He had a cracking shot on him, didn’t he?

Yeah, a hammer of a left foot. His Scottish accent was even better!

Finally, if you had to select a five-a-side team out of all the Rangers players you’ve seen in your time as a fan, who would you pick?

Andy Goram, Jörg Albertz, Paul Gascoigne, Brian Laudrup and Ally McCoist.

Gaz, thank you.
